Tips for Rodent Control and Prevention in Your Home

Updated: Jan 24

No one wants any kind of rodent in their home. Dealing with mice and rats in your home can be such a frustrating and challenging task. These resilient creatures have a knack for finding their way into our living spaces, often causing damage and even spreading disease.

To combat a rodent infestation effectively, it's essential to understand their behavior and employ strategic control methods.

Figure Out the Warning Signs

Look for signs of rodent activity such as grease marks, urine stains, and dark shadows, as these indicate high-traffic areas for rodents. By identifying their preferred routes, you can target these spots if you choose to put down traps or bait stations.

Optimal Trap Selection and Placement

Trap placement is a critical aspect of successful rodent control. Instead of randomly scattering traps around a room, focus on strategic placement near high-activity areas. Start by positioning unset traps in locations with visible signs of rodent presence.

Allow these traps to sit for at least three days to familiarize the rodents with them and build trust. Once they become comfortable, replace some of the unset traps with baited, set traps. This approach increases the likelihood of capturing the rodents, as they will perceive the traps as harmless.

Effective Rodent Control Tips

Seal Entry Points

Rodents can squeeze through surprisingly small openings. Older homes can be more susceptible to cracks, gaps, or holes since their foundations are much older. If you decide to seal off potential entry points, make sure to conduct a thorough inspection of your home's exterior.

You can use steel wool, caulk, or wire mesh to cover up these openings.

Keep a Clean Environment

Regularly clean up food crumbs, spills, and garbage to eliminate potential food sources for rodents. Store food (including pet food) in airtight containers, and promptly repair any leaks or water damage.

Utilize Natural Deterrents

If you're not one for traps containing chemicals or even regular mouse traps, you can opt for natural repellents like:

  • peppermint oil

  • mothballs

  • vinegar-soaked cotton balls

Put these in rodent-prone areas to keep mice and rats away without risking harm from chemicals to you or your pets.

Monitor and Maintain Activity

Regularly inspect traps and replenish bait as required. Keep an eye out for any signs of rodent activity and promptly address it.
